Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

While Chatsworth High suffered through two straight City championship baseball losses, Jason Spector was at Taft, suffering through two last-place finishes.

``Having not been there the past three years didn't matter,'' Spector said. ``It felt like I was there.''

the sweetness, the entire team spent Thursday night celebrating at Spector's house. The Chancellors didn't sleep much, spending the time making noise and re-watching their 17-7 rout of Poly.

As a result, when life returned to normal Friday at Chatsworth High, the players were absent. Some went for a few periods, but senior outfielder Chad Redfern was one who stayed away completely.

Poly players also stayed away from school Friday. That they didn't get home until about midnight, the result of playing a 2 hour, 58 minute game, didn't matter. They and their loyal following of fans were too down.

In some ways, the merriment was a year in the making. After being favored last year - and denied by El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

By the time the championship game arrived, the Chancellors were sure the game was theirs. When Poly led 1-0 and 6-5, they weren't concerned.

``You can't put us down one run and expect to win,'' Redfern said. ``You've got to get us down by at least four runs.''

The big blow was Charles Kenny's three-run triple in the fifth off Poly ace Carlos Reguengo that gave Chatsworth a 9-6 lead.

``It was a shot in their backs,'' Spector said. ``When they brought in Reguengo, that's what we wanted. In winter ball, he shut us down, and then all the quotes: `I get better as I pitch more.' One through nine, we were unbelievable.''
