CHAMPS HAVEN'T GOTTEN DUE; PARK VIEW ALL-STAR SOFTBALL TEAM CAPTURED WORLD SERIES TITLE.

These players, too, went to the World Series.

They faced teams from Canada, Russia, the Philippines, Mexico and other parts of the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. They played against a highly favored Florida team that held the title for the past eight years.

This team, from Lancaster, won 4-2 in 10 innings to win the World Series title.

But few heard about the Park View Senior All-Star Little League softball team. America's attention focused on another California Little League squad that reached the World Series - a baseball team from Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

``It was a very well-kept secret here in California that we have a championship girls' team,'' said Park View coach Walt Patison, in his last year of coaching Little League. ``We congratulate the boys because they got to the world championship game, too. But it is frustrating - for the coaches and managers, the parents and for the girls. Their accomplishments kind of went unheard of Not heard of; of which there are no tidings.

awarded to Little League baseball, Park View's efforts received plenty of much-deserved recognition from the Lancaster community. Fans greeted them at the airport when they arrived home from Kalamazoo, Mich.; a barbecue at the Park View field attended by local residents was held; plaques were awarded to the girls by City Hall officials; and they were featured in the annual Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. After three more tournaments in California, the team traveled to Oregon for the Western regionals, where it defeated Tucson, Ariz., and Oahu, Hawaii, to advance to the World Series. By the series' end, Park View had a 20-0 record, scored a total of 176 runs, allowed their opponents only 28 runs, shut out four teams (including a 15-0 win against Canyon in the sectionals), committed just 17 errors, and registered a .353 batting average batting average

The team attributes its success to experience, although some believe its pregame ritual of warm-ups, a cheer and a prayer helped. Two years ago, nine of the senior team's 14 members played in the World Series as a 12-and-under team, where they lost in the final game in Portland. Three of the girls - Highland's Melissa Rawson, Lancaster's Candace Johnson and Quartz Hill's Salazar - also play high school varsity softball.  Kellie Cox, the youngest on the team at 13. ``Everything just clicked.''

Another key factor in Park View's success is the combination of catcher D'Errico - who caught all the games - and pitcher Nichole Rawson. Rawson pitched all 10 innings of the championship game against Naples, striking out eight batters, walking none and scattering six hits. Overall, she had 10 wins, one save and an 0.83 ERA.

D'Errico, who made no errors in the tournament, suffered a pinched nerve when she overextended overextended,

her back to catch a passed ball early in the final game. Despite the pain, she insisted upon staying in the game. Even with a sore back, she threw out everyone who tried to steal.

``I couldn't really bend my back over, I kind of stayed upright,'' D'Errico said. ``It hurt a lot, but I had to stay because it was the championship game. It's something you have to do. Your team's depending on you.''

For D'Errico, the most memorable moment of the victory was taking down the Florida flag - waving over the field for the past eight years - and raising the California flag with Nichole Rawson.
