Byline: Paul O'Donoghue Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Fresh from winning Ventura County's Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events. , Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. The team's nine members - many wearing their medals - gathered at lunchtime in coach Ken Hibbitts' classroom, where they admired the dozen or so trophies they'd won and accepted the congratulations of their friends.

During the weekend contest, Simi Valley beat teams from 15 other high schools - including defending national champion Moorpark High.

, the only junior on the team, said the victory made the untold hours of studying worthwhile.

``The great thing about Academic Decathlon is that it gives recognition to your academic skills,'' said White.

``And the nicest part of the contest is it's a friendly competition. And it's not like fateful enemies but friendly rivals. That is really nice.

``I even had one of the Moorpark parents congratulate me after the competition. And I wasn't watching, but my parents told me that when we got the award for being the top scorer, the Moorpark kids gave us a standing ovation.''

scored 50,195 of a possible 60,000 points, compared with Moorpark's 49,528 points, for tests in 10 subjects.

Hibbitts said Simi Valley High will have to get a new trophy case because of the number of honors won by the students, who studied an average of 35 hours each week - including weekends - in addition to regular school time and homework.

``We're very, very proud of what happened,'' he said. ``All of the hard work paid off in the end.''

Hibbitts' wife, Sally, the assistant coach, said the whole school is proud of the team's achievement.

``The school is 100 percent behind us,'' she said. ``We've had pats on the backs and congratulations all day long.''

But team members noted that Simi could still face rival Moorpark in next month's state finals. The top 10 teams in the state that didn't win a county title will compete as wild-card entries.
