CHAMPION STUDENTS MAY TRAVEL TO CAPITAL.

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Daily News Staff Writer

The national championship Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  team from Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1]  got word Friday that they could soon be winging their way to Washington, D.C., and might meet President Clinton at the White House.

Rep. Elton Gallegly's office said Friday that the team members and their coaches, Larry Jones Larry Jones is also the real name of Atlanta Braves player Chipper Jones.

Jones said the team was still waiting for final confirmation of the invitation, but are optimistic op·ti·mist

``The kids are excited about it,'' Jones said. ``Ari (Shaw) is the only one who has really been to Washington. . . . None of the rest have been, and I love the city.''

Last month, the team, which includes Ari, Arturo Barragan, Alexandra Dove, John Ellis John Ellis may refer to:

, Valerie Lake, Nick Lange, Mitul Patel and Rebecca Wershba, turned in a stunning upset over the team from Texas favored to win the national competition.

A day after the team's fairy-tale victory, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is an American politician and the current junior U.S. Senator from the State of California.

dashed off a letter to the White House to arrange for an invitation. Soon after, Gallegly, R-Oxnard, made a request of his own on the team's behalf.

After weeks of waiting, the invitation finally came, Gallegly said.

``I'm pleased that the White House responded to our request,'' Gallegly said through a spokesman. ``This is a special time for these young people and it is a well-deserved recognition. I think the president will be very impressed im·press 1

While the idea of making the trip is an exciting one, the team was initially concerned about how they would pay for it. The group has already spent several hundred dollars on travel expenses to attend the state competition in Stockton and the national competition in Anaheim.

But Moorpark residents and business leaders have come through for the team that has put the small town on the map.

A woman who had followed the team's journey from the county to the state and finally the national competitions through newspaper reports arranged for her employer, Northwest Airlines, to pay for the airline tickets. And Target gave the team a check for several thousand dollars to cover hotel rooms.
