But Nadal denied he was a champion quitting on hstool instead of being carried out on his shield, saying: "Nobody is more disappointed than me, but I could not carry on. "But I worked very hard to try and be ready to play at Wimbledon and I want to come back when I am ready to win here again. "I have been playing with a problem in both knees for a few months now, and week after week I have tried to carry on. But it has reached a stage now where I need to rest." Nadal's withdrawal gave 22- year-old Murray even more reason to believe he will end Britain's 73-year wait for a men's singles champion at SW19.
