EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

THE strong economy resulted in a fairly good year for chambers of commerce in L.A. County. Of the 25 biggest, 18 either saw an increase in their operating budgets Noun 1. operating budget - a budget for current expenses as distinct from financial transactions or permanent improvements
budget items, operating cost, operating expense, overhead - the expense of maintaining property (e.g.
 in 1999 or remained the same as the previous year.

A notable exception was the top chamber on the list: the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area group, whose budget fell from $4.3 million to $4 million. And while the L.A. chamber is still by far the largest in terms of budget, it is not the largest in terms of members. The City of Industry group's numbers are inflated, however, because the council automatically counts every business in the city as being a member (although only dues-paying members can participate in the organization's monthly events).

LOS ANGELES AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEMBERSHIP and dues at the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce have been dropping steadily for the past decade. From 2,300 members in 1992, the chamber this year reports only 1,350.
