CHAMBER SETS EVENTS FLAVORFUL TASTE OF ENCINO COMING IN OCTOBER FOR 19TH YEAR.Byline: Mark Kellam Valley News Writer When residents attend the annual Taste of Encino, many of them might not know that the delicious event is served up by the Encino Chamber of Commerce. The chamber, formed in 1936, has been holding the Taste of Encino for 18 years. Last year, 25 restaurants participated, providing samples of their favorite dishes. The event will be held this year on Oct. 8, said Kirsten Chong, chamber CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. In addition to the Taste of Encino, the chamber is involved in the community in many other ways, said chamber President Joel Simon. Balboa Blvd., Encino. The evening event will be held from 5:30 to 7. Five local restaurants are scheduled to participate. Among the guests of honor will be Lake Balboa Battalion Fire Chief Mark Markotta, Simon said. The chamber also sponsors an annual teachers luncheon, to be held May 19 this year at the Warner Center Marriott, 21850 Oxnard St., Woodland Hills. Each year, about a dozen teachers from schools in Encino are honored, each receiving a grant ranging from $600 to $1,000, Simon said. The money is used in the teachers' classrooms. This will be the 15th year for the teachers luncheon, said Simon, who has been an attorney since 1978 and is a partner with the law firm Alperstein, Simon, Farkas, Gillin and Scott. On Sept. 28, the chamber will help sponsor the Arman Arabian Luncheon, honoring outstanding volunteers from throughout the Valley. Usually, six volunteers are honored. The event, which has been held the past six years, will be at Airtel Plaza, 7277 Valjean Ave., Van Nuys. In addition to the volunteers being recognized, a student receives a $1,000 scholarship at the event each year. At its annual holiday party, the chamber collects toys and books for local less-fortunate children, Chong said. On the fundraising side, the chamber will hold its second annual miniature golf tournament on April 20 at the Castle Park Miniature Golf Course. The tournament will cost $30 per individual and $250 for a foursome, Chong said. Castle Park is at 4989 Sepulveda Blvd., Sherman Oaks. Looking at the past year, Simon said the chamber's biggest accomplishment was hiring Chong as the chamber's head staff member. Chong was previously director of marketing and public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. This is his first term as Encino chamber president, though last year he was president of the United Chambers of Commerce, which represents many chambers throughout the Valley. The chamber's biggest challenge in 2006 will be health care, particularly the future of Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center, which has a campus in each of the cities in its name. The hospital is owned by Tenet Healthcare Tenet Healthcare Corporation (THC) is an operating company that owns and operates 57 hospitals in the United States [1]. It is based in Dallas, Texas. Its stock ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange is NYSE: THC. Corp., which is rumored to be considering selling the hospital. Simon pointed out that the medical center has been a strong business partner in the community and said he wants to make sure it remains that way in the future. He added, however, that Tenet is a private corporation, so civic leaders won't know the future of the hospital until it's announced by corporate representatives. ``It's a private situation, so all we can do is speak up,'' Simon said.
