The Leadership Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  program has enlightened me as to the great people, businesses, organizations and overall positive spirit that help make Simi Valley a wonderful community.

I was pleased and honored to be accepted into the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce's 1995-96 Leadership Simi Valley program. The nine months of participation helped me to realize that, even in a city of more than 100,000 people, individuals can have a significant impact on the entire community. The program gave me knowledge, tools and contacts that can help me become a more active supporter of our community.

One of the ideologies of my employer, Whittaker Electronic Systems, is to ``be a contributing community member through actual deeds deed

2. A usually praiseworthy act; a feat or exploit.

3. Action or performance in general: Deeds, not words, matter most.

Club, the chamber, the Simi Valley Free Clinic, United Way and other organizations. I plan to volunteer to be an ambassador or liaison between Whittaker and the community.

I will be seeking other areas in which my talents and passions could contribute to the community. Obviously, one of my priorities will be the continued support of Leadership Simi Valley. Other areas I wish to investigate include sports activities, recreation, service clubs and Neighborhood Councils Neighborhood councils are governmental or non-governmental bodies composed of local people who handle neighborhood problems. They can be found in many cities throughout the world. .

A side benefit of becoming more knowledgeable about the community is that I've been able to help others with information. Recently, for example, a co-worker expressed dismay over some graffiti graffiti

Form of visual communication, usually illegal, involving the unauthorized marking of public space by an individual or group. Technically the term applies to designs scratched through a layer of paint or plaster, but its meaning has been extended to other markings.
that had appeared in her neighborhood. I was able to advise her of the Graffiti Hotline at (805) 583-6444. She reported with pleasure that the graffiti was removed shortly after she made her call. It made me feel good to help. I'm looking forward to other opportunities of this type.

Overall, the Leadership Simi Valley program has helped transform me from a passive member of the community to an involved, contributing supporter of our community.
