Instead, they too fell.

Bella was hit by bullets five times, Foster three.

On Thursday, still recovering from their own wounds, the two heroes were honored for their courage by the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber also honored Detective of the Year Roland L'Heureux of the LAPD's West Valley Division; and Firefighter of the Year Robert Hendrickson and Paramedic par·a·med·ic

In May, Bella and Foster were members of a rescue team assigned to help wounded Glendale Officer Charles Lazzaretto, who had gone to the warehouse to talk to Israel Chapa Gonzalez about a report that Gonzalez had severely beaten his girlfriend.

The two rescue officers did not know at the time that Lazzaretto had died within a minute of being shot.

``As grave as it looks, you still have to make an attempt to rescue the downed officer. You'd be crazy to do this job if no one helps you, if you can't count on your partner to help you,'' Bella said Thursday.

As soon as they entered the warehouse, Gonzalez began firing shots.

``Foster was hit first, and he didn't leave me,'' Bella said. ``He's the reason why I got out. He was able to run out but didn't. He chose to stay with me.''

``Kevin Foster, in my opinion, deserves a Medal of Valor For other medals of the same name, see .

``Those two went in the line of fire to save a brother officer, and they knew they were going to get shot,'' Bostic said.

Bella and Foster appreciated the recognition at the ceremony.

``It's nice to get honored,'' Bella said. ``All we did was get shot.''
