CHALLENGERS, INCUMBENTS DECLARE INTENT TO ENTER APRIL ELECTIONS.

Campaign '97 began Wednesday with candidates for city, Board of Education and Community College District offices taking out declarations of intent to run in the April 8 election.

At stake in the election is the office of mayor, city attorney, city controller, eight City Council seats as well as three members each of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Board of Education and the Community College District. A majority vote will be needed to avoid a June runoff.

A number of incumbents filed their declarations to run as did several high-profile candidates, who are vying for open seats or those held by incumbents.

Chief among these was Encino attorney Ted Stein, a former adviser to Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , who is challenging City Attorney James Hahn For the Iowa politician, see .

James Kenneth "Jim" Hahn (born July 3, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He was the Deputy City Attorney (1975-1979), City Controller (1981-1985), City Attorney (1985-2001) and Mayor of Los Angeles, California
, who has not yet filed his declaration.

Also declaring was former council deputy Cindy Miscikowski Cindy Miscikowski represented the 11th District on the Los Angeles City Council for two full terms from 1997 through 2005. Previously, she was an aide to Councilman Marvin Braude and the Executive Director of the Skitball Cultural Center in its beginning stages.  for the seat being vacated by Councilman Marvin Braude Marvin Braude (August 11, 1920—December 7, 2005)served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. At various times Mr. Braude (pronounced BROW-dee) served as chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee, the Environmental Quality and Waste , for whom she once worked.

Under the city process, candidates must file their declaration of intent by Jan. 13. On that date, they will begin circulating nominating petitions that must be returned by Feb. 3. Each candidate much collect the signatures of 500 registered voters and pay a $300 filing fee. They can avoid the fee by submitting petitions with 1,000 registered voters.

Neither Riordan nor his announced opponent, state Sen. Tom Hayden Thomas Emmett "Tom" Hayden (born December 11, 1939) is an American social and political activist and politician, most famous for his involvement in the anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s. , D-Los Angeles, filed their declarations for mayor on Monday, but there were several candidates who did. They are government worker Martin Luther King Aubrey of Los Angeles, railroad worker Craig Honts of Los Angeles and consultant-paralegal Kwame A. Boateng of Los Angeles.

City Controller Rick Tuttle Rick Tuttle (born 1940) was Los Angeles City Controller from 1985 to 2001. He stressed the importance of creating a strong democratic influence at UCLA, which was in his words "the best large public university in a major city.  filed his declaration for re-election and health care worker Virginia Garza, of Los Angeles filed to challenge him.

In council races:

1st Council District: Businessman Jean Durand of Los Angeles declared for the seat held by Councilman Mike Hernandez.

3rd Council District: Councilwoman Laura Chick of Woodland Hills.

9th Council District: Human rights activist Addie Miller of Los Angeles declared for the seat held by Councilwoman Rita Walters Rita Walters (1930-) is currently the commissioner of the Los Angeles Public Library. Prior to this position, she served on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 9th district. During that time, she chaired the Arts, Health & Humanities Committee. .

11th Council District: In addition to Miscikowski, real estate broker Russ Cook of Tarzana and businessman Mark Isler of Van Nuys declared.

15th Council District: Councilman Rudy Svorinich Rudy Svorinich (born 1960) is a Republican who served on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 15th district. A resident of San Pedro, his diverse district also includes the community of Watts. He was elected to the council in 1993 and served two full terns.  of San Pedro declared for re-election.

In Board of Education races:

District 4: Small-business woman Debra Greenfield of West Hills declared for the seat being vacated by Mark Slavkin.

In Community College District races:

District 2: Incumbent Elizabeth Garfield of Los Angeles declared for re-election as did civil engineer Charles Bergson of Los Angeles.

District 6: Incumbent Althea Baker of Los Angeles declared for re-election as did council deputy Lewis Lester of Culver City.
