CHALKIT UP TO ART WEEKEND FESTIVAL WILL TURN STREETS INTO CANVASES.Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer NEWHALL - Despite Thursday's overcast sky, artist Lorelle Miller hunkered down to add several orange chalk lines to a taped-off square in a downtown Newhall parking lot. Stepping back, one could see the form of a famous gallery work coming to fruition. Miller and Julie Kirk, another featured chalk artist, will be joined Saturday by creators of all ages putting their own chalk spin on 2-foot-by-2-foot squares as part of the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Community arts groups will be out in force at the festival, as booths from various vendors will feature arts, crafts and food. Applications for next year's festival will be available and a drawing will be conducted for a free art square for the 2005 festival, which is chalked in for Oct. 1 and 2. ``We will have a much bigger event next year,'' Lantis said, indicating that street closures are planned from Newhall Avenue to Lyons Avenue.
