CHALKING UP ACHIEVEMENTS 15 INSTRUCTORS IN THE COUNTY SET FOR HONORS.

Byline: Holly Edwards Staff Writer

UNIVERSAL CITY - Fifteen area teachers deemed the best in their school districts will be honored today during a luncheon at the Hilton in Universal City.

The teachers are among 63 winners of their school districts' Teacher of the Year Awards in Los Angeles County. They competed for the state and national titles, which were both won by retired Army Col. Chauncey Veatch, a social studies teacher at Coachella Valley High School Coachella Valley High School is a public high school for grades 9-12. It is located in Thermal, California. History
The high school was opened in September 1916 after ten acres of desert brush land was donated.
 in Riverside County.

Today's luncheon is intended to celebrate the achievements of Los Angeles County's finest educators, said Rick de la Torre, a spokesman for the county Office of Education.

``Teachers deserve a lot of recognition for all they do, and this is one simple way to do that,'' de la Torre said. ``A lot of them bring their families and their superintendents, and they're all treated like royalty.''

The Teachers of the Year Program is an honors competition designed to draw attention to excellence in public school teaching. Each fall, local district winners compete in the countywide Teachers of the Year Program. Twelve are chosen to represent the county in the state contest. A state committee names five California Teachers of the Year, with one named as the state's nominee for the national competition.

One of the county winners, Dennis Lynch of Canyon High School Canyon High School can refer to:
  • Canyon High School (Anaheim) in Anaheim, California
  • Canyon High School (Santa Clarita), in Santa Clarita, California
  • Canyon High School (Canyon, Texas), in Canyon, Texas
in Santa Clarita, said it's gratifying for teachers to be recognized by the community for their hard work.

Lynch, who has been teaching history for 38 years, said he loves his job just as much as he did on his first day and has no intention of retiring yet.

``Kids are an endless amount of joy, but they can also be very annoying, so being a teacher is a lot like being a parent,'' he said. ``You have to love it and you have to have a lot of durability and a good sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

.''

Valerie Jeanne Ray, who teaches fifth grade at the Kester Gifted/High Ability Magnet Center in Van Nuys, said teaching has been her calling since fourth grade when she had an instructor whom she idolized. Her selection as a Teacher of the Year is gratifying, she said.

``This award validates what you've been doing and lets you know you're doing a good job and are making a difference,'' said Ray, who has been teaching for 32 years. ``We always see the negativity but we don't always see the good things happening in school.''
