CHALK UP ANOTHER FAIRPLEX WIN FOR STUTE.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Mel Stute holds the Fairplex Park record for victories by a trainer. Although some doubt that's much of an honor, he desperately wants to keep the lead.

Just like his 6-year-old horse Score Quick, who led the Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap from start to finish Sunday under jockey Matt Garcia, fighting off Budroyale and Sovereign M.D. at the wire to make it back-to-back wins in the $100,000 main event of the Fairplex season.

``It means a lot to me,'' Stute, a native of nearby Covina, said of the victory, his 146th and 40th in a stakes at the L.A. County Fair. ``When you're raised somewhere, you kind of want to be the best. It's an ego thing.

``I sweat whenever (pursuers) Jerry Fanning or Ted West wins a race.''

Stute, 71, trained his first Pomona winner Sept. 24, 1949, in a race with a $2,000 purse. So what does he say to those who make fun of the little track?

``I tell 'em they're crazy,'' he said. ``It's the best place in the world to watch a race, because the horses are so close.''

Score Quick ($4.40) obviously likes it. He's the eighth repeat winner of the 1-1/8-mile Pomona Invitational, and has three wins, a second and a third in five Fairplex starts.
