CHAIN TO BUILD BASE IN REGION; RITE AID PICKS LANCASTER SITE.

Drug store chain Rite Aid Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) is a United States retailer and pharmacy chain, operating over 5,000 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Rite Aid Corporation is one of the nation's leading drugstore chains.  Corp. will begin construction next month on a $60 million to $70 million distribution center in Lancaster, which will employ 400 people to start and could have as many as 1,000 workers eventually.

The company, which announced plans last year to open dozens of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  stores, expects to begin construction at 30th Street West between Avenues G-8 and H in February and plans to be ready for business in the fall of 1999.

Rite Aid plans to have 400 employees when the distribution center opens and then grow to 850 workers within three years. Eventually the company said it could have 1,000 workers at the site.

To land the project, Lancaster is selling the 88 acres to Rite Aid for $1. Lancaster also will forgo $1.4 million in development fees.

Rite Aid, which has more than 3,900 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). , also received offers from Arizona and Nevada.
