CHAIN STEAKS CLAIM; RESTAURANT COULD HASTEN FALLBROOK MALL UPGRADE.

In what could be the first sign of a face lift for the Fallbrook Mall, a Minneapolis-based steakhouse chain plans to open a new restaurant at the facility, officials said Wednesday.

Buffets Inc., which operates the Hometown Buffet restaurant inside the mall, will spend about $1 million building the 6,900-square-foot restaurant, he said.

Wichard said business at the Hometown Buffet has been good and that he expects the same kind of performance from the Original Roadhouse Grill despite the fact that other free-standing restaurants have not fared well in that location.

General Properties opened the mall in 1966 and renovated it in 1985.

Officials said new renovation plans are now just at the idea stage.

Negotiations are also under way with possible tenants at a former bank and another restaurant site on the mall's property, officials said.
