CGames: Delhi's delayed venues under inspection

Delegates from countries that will compete at next year's Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  in New Delhi New Delhi (dĕl`ē), city (1991 pop. 294,149), capital of India and of Delhi state, N central India, on the right bank of the Yamuna River.  inspected venues and facilities Thursday, as concerns mount over the city's troubled preparations.

A leaked letter from the Games chief last month warned the Indian capital that delays and poor planning posed a "serious risk" to one of the world's biggest sporting events.

The inspection tour by Commonwealth Games Federation members comes one year before the start of the Games, which involve 6,000 athletes competing in 17 sports across the city.

"Delegates will visit the athletes' village and various venues today and tomorrow," a spokeswomen for Delhi 2010 said. "They will then hold their general assembly on Monday."

Commonwealth Games Federation chief Michael Fennell is expected to meet with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stress the amount of work needed over the next 12 months.

Many of the 11 main venues are behind schedule, the roof over the main stadium has only recently been begun, and workers are rushing to complete massive infrastructure projects -- including new metro lines and a train link to the airport.

India, which has enjoyed a decade of rapid economic growth, hopes the Games will promote a modern image of the country, though official figures show about one in four of its 1.2 billion people still live below the poverty line.
