CGI take on classic tale is frightful yet delightful.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL IN 3D **** PG

THERE'S an episode of Doctor Who where the Timelord meets Charles Dickens who, upon seeing a ghost, asks: "What phantasmagoria phan·tas·ma·go·ri·a or phan·tas·ma·go·ry
n. pl. phan·tas·ma·go·ri·as or phan·tas·ma·go·ries
A fantastic sequence of haphazardly associative imagery, as seen in dreams or fever.
 is this?

" I imagine that's exactly what the real Dickens would have said if he were alive today to see Robert Zemeckis brilliant take on his classic story of redemption and change.

Not only is it a visual extravaganza with dazzling special effects special effects, in motion pictures, cinematographic techniques that create illusions in the audience's minds as well as the illusions created using these techniques.  but it also stays pretty true to Dickens' original tale, published in 1843.

The detail is incredible and the virtual sets are unparalleled. The movie is enhanced even more by the impressive 3D effects, which make it all the more frightening.

And boy, is it scary. In fact, it's far more frightening than this week's so-called horror flick Jennifer's Body - and that's rated 15.

Zemeckis doesn't hold back on the horror. The content is dark, disturbing and nightmare-inducing but hopefully youngsters will, like Scrooge, see the light at the end of the tunnel and remember the movie's moral about what's important in life instead.
