CFSAN announces its new Office of Food Safety, Defense, and Outreach.The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN, pronounced sif'-san) is the branch of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which regulates food, dietary supplements, and cosmetics. "Food" within the context of FDA is a very broad term with some limitations. (CFSAN CFSAN Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (US FDA) ) has formed a new Office of Food Safety, Defense, and Outreach (OFSDO), which consolidates the center's outreach and education on food safety and defense with its counterterrorism coun·ter·ter·ror adj. Intended to prevent or counteract terrorism: counterterror measures; counterterror weapons. n. The office vision is "to increase CFSAN's recognition by the outside world as a resource for information on food safety, food defense, nutrition, and cosmetics." David Acheson David Campion Acheson (born 4 November 1921, Washington DC) is an American lawyer and the a son of former US Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Centerwide outreach and education functions and associated personnel have been merged into OFSDO, with delegated authority Delegated authority is an authority obtained from another that has authority since the authority does not naturally exist. Typically this is used in a government context where an organization that is created by a legitimate government, such as a Board, City, Town or other for center-based communication. The functions include consumer education and industry outreach (formerly within the Office of Constituent Operations), trade press activities (formerly within the Executive Operations Staff), labeling and nutrition outreach (formerly within the Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements), and outreach and education (currently within FSSS). The center faces many significant issues that require communication to its stakeholder community. The consolidated OFSDO will serve as a conduit between the program offices, which are the source of scientific expertise, and stakeholders. OFSDO will work closely with the program offices to identify their outreach and education needs, develop materials, and coordinate public events (e.g., public meetings and rollouts), as necessary. These changes are designed to improve the quality, quantity, and timeliness of CFSAN outreach and education. In addition, they are intended to provide a more visible interface to its stakeholders and to ensure centerwide consistency in procedures and consumer messages.
