The installation is the result of a five-year working relationship between Axeda and CERN ST/CV (technical support /cooling and ventilation) department to provide the best networked monitoring solution.

"Thanks to Axeda's remote monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a  technology, we can use our local Intranet to provide open, real-time communication to the employees who maintain supervisory control Supervisory control is a general term for control of many individual controllers or control loops, whether by a human or an automatic control system, although almost every real system is a combination of both.  of all the vital elements of our installation," said Didier Blanc, head of process engineering, supervision and regulation at ST/CV department. "The integrated solution has enabled almost 80 members of the cooling and ventilation staff to regularly access technical information such as ventilation and cooling parameters from any computer at our facility using a simple Web navigator."

At CERN, underground installations of particle accelerators stretch great distances with `wells' adjoining them. These wells allow the underground installations to receive air, water, heat, cold and power for the survival of the teams conducting experiments and to power the equipment they use. The Axeda Supervisor(TM), a component of the Axeda Device Relationship Management System, is being used to enable the real-time, secure monitoring and automation of a number of wells by allowing the access and processing of nearly 400,000 parameters. The Axeda Supervisor also monitors 13 cooling stations of the Super Proton Synchrotron The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is a particle accelerator at CERN. Originally specified as a 300 GeV proton machine, the SPS was actually built to be capable of 400GeV, an operating energy it achieved on the official commissioning date of 17 June 1976.  accelerator, 11 cooling stations of the Proton Synchrotron proton synchrotron

"We are particularly pleased that CERN, the birthplace of the World Wide Web, has the confidence in Axeda technology to provide their critical Web-based data access and control," said Robert M. "By providing CERN with all the capability required to deploy high-performance Internet-based control systems, we've enabled CERN to streamline its business and provide real-time automation and remote monitoring of vital components."

About Axeda Supervisor

The Axeda Supervisor suite provides the user with a highly flexible Web-based decision support solution for managing facilities, devices and automation systems. Its sophisticated scheduler, with advanced alarm management and enhanced security, enables users to define and control alarm settings and to automate the scheduling of periodic actions. The Axeda Supervisor communicates urgent device information with the appropriate person at the right time through a variety of mechanisms such as fax, email, voicemail, SMS (1) (Storage Management System) Software used to routinely back up and archive files. Founded in 1954, the laboratory was one of Europe's first joint ventures, and has become a shining example of international collaboration. From the original 12 signatories of the CERN convention, membership has grown to the present 20 Member States. At present, its Member States are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Often referred to as where the "Web was born" a CERN computer scientist originally conceived and developed the World Wide Web in 1990 for the large high-energy physics collaborations which have a demand for instantaneous information sharing between physicists working in different universities and institutes all over the world. The Web now has millions of academic and commercial users globally. More information about CERN is available at www.cern.ch.

About Device Relationship Management

The intelligent devices that we see and interact with everyday such as copiers, elevators, vending machines, building control units, medical devices, and even automobiles represent an important new source of business information. To date most enterprises have not been able to tap this information. Device Relationship Management addresses this significant information blind spot by providing a distributed information management system that leverages the Internet, allowing timely, accurate, and unbiased information to be communicated automatically between remote devices deployed at customer facilities and external service personnel or enterprise business systems. Device Relationship Management helps turn reactive businesses into proactive businesses providing new sources of revenue and increased operational efficiency at lower costs with an ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot).  that can often be measured in months.
