CEREMONIES HONOR 9-11 VICTIMS CONCERT AND SPEECHES MARK SOLEMN ANNIVERSARY.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

The victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks were remembered in ceremonies across Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  on Sunday as Americans across the nation commemorated the tragedy with speeches, vigils and music.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  and other officials marked the four-year anniversary of the attacks at an Elysian Park Elysian Park can mean:

During a ceremony at Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in Elysian Park, attendees remembered the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

``We also honor the innocent victims: the men, the women, the children who so tragically lost their lives,'' Villaraigosa said. ``This day ... was seared sear 1

City Councilman Eric Garcetti Eric Garcetti (born 1971) is the son of former Los Angeles county district attorney Gil Garcetti, and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2001. He was reelected in 2005.  used the occasion to speak of American freedom.

``Freedom blows like the breeze that we have before us today,'' Garcetti said. ``And while we think sometimes and those who are enemies would think that they can take that freedom away, freedom is not just fragile; freedom is fierce. The fiercest enemy you'll ever meet.''

For Karen Christoffersen, her husband, John Capellero, and their children, the 9-11 attacks were a personal event in their lives. The Burbank residents were at the Pentagon for a tour when hijackers crashed American Airlines American Airlines

``As soon as we exited the building, we could see and smell the smoke coming over and the fuel smell, and we knew something was wrong,'' Christoffersen said. ``It wasn't just a bomb scare. It wasn't just a small fire. But we didn't want to alert the kids.''

On Sunday, Christoffersen, Capellero and a daughter listened to a 9-11 memorial concert by the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

In North Hollywood, firefighters and middle school students completed about a 5-mile torch run and extinguished the torch's flame at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first of two planes hit the World Trade Center.

The run was designed both to commemorate the 9-11 attacks and raise funds for a memorial for all the Los Angeles Fire Department's fallen firefighters.

Firefighter Greg Pascolla, 43, joined the run. In recent years, he attended ceremonies at the 9-11 memorial in North Hollywood Park, where he met a surviving relative of someone who died in the attacks.

``It became real (then). There was a personal connection,'' Pascolla said. ``It really hit home.''
