CEO of UPS Discusses UPS's Transformation Into an e-Business Powerhouse.Business Editors LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 2000 Nearly every company today is spinning itself as an "e-Business" in one form or another. UPS (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :UPS) is one of the few that can actually make the claim stick. In a recent interview with CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. Live.com, UPS Chairman and CEO James Kelly discussed the company's most recent incarnation: as the logistics arm of a company's e-Commerce supply chain. "Many e-Tailers want to (strictly) sell a product. UPS does everything in between ... billing and accounts receivable as well as inventory, warehousing and delivery," said Kelly, "elements in the supply chain that we haven't done before (until now.)" UPS will do this through its new UPS e-Venture subsidiary, which is targeted at dot-com startups. "Some folks have a marvelous idea and put up a Web site," Kelly explained, "but they don't give consideration to the fulfillment side. We think of ourselves as enabling global commerce." Something that competitor FedEx (NYSE:FDX) has been late to embrace. "What FedEx is attempting to do now is capture a part of it because of the potential," said Kelley. Though the business-to-consumer side remains profitable for UPS, Kelly believes that true growth lies in b-to-b services. "Many technology and hospital supply companies are emulating Dell's (Nasdaq:DELL) just-in-time shipping model and are coming to UPS to help them do that," Kelly said. "Our own logistics business is over a billion dollars now. The potential is just tremendous." To hear the complete interview, or for a transcript, visit www.ceolive.com.
