Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Community Sports

Saugus High's athletic program celebrated its annual Sammy Awards on Wednesday night, honoring the school's top male and female athletes in all sports.

Every nominee wrote an essay about the importance of high school sports in all aspects of their lives, and the winners were honore Adam Tripp (baseball), Drew DeRousseau (football), Julia Bradley (girls' basketball), B.J. School principal Norman Estrada was awarded a honorary Sammy as well.

--The news wasn't all good at Saugus on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, it was learned the softball team would have to forfeit To lose to another person or to the state some privilege, right, or property due to the commission of an error, an offense, or a crime, a breach of contract, or a neglect of duty; to subject property to confiscation; or to become liable for the payment of a penalty, as the result of a  three league victories - costing the team a playoff berth - because of an ineligible player.

The members of the team weren't informed until the next afternoon - just hours before the regular-season finale against Hart - and, not surprisingly, the girls were angry and upset; many were crying.

Coach Rich Perez said he takes the blame because he wasn't thorough about checking the grades. However, co-athletic director Teri Lord said the player in question had lied to administrators - even though Lord agreed it was the staff's job to file paperwork.

Burrill said the matter isn't closed and further disciplinary action might be taken - although against whom isn't clear.
