With more adults being deployed to Point Mugu as part of military consolidation efforts, officials said there are more children than the existing 20-year-old center that can accommodate.

``The current center is small and we've kind of strained our facilities,'' said spokeswoman Teri Reid. ``We just need more room to accommodate the children of military and civilian employees, and to offer different types of activities.''

Ground was broken Tuesday on the new facility, and construction is to begin next week.

The federal government is paying for the single-story 10,000-square-foot center that is slated to open in March.

Facilities at the center will include a playground Playground - A visual language for children, developed for Apple's Vivarium Project. OOPSLA 89 or 90? , two classrooms, a computer room, a game room, a room exclusively for teens to hang out in, a snack bar and two basketball courts, said Reid.

The new center is to be built alongside the existing one. Officials have not yet made plans for using the existing facility.

The architect for the facility is Rasmussen and Associates of Ventura and the contractor is San Diego-based Solpak, Inc.

There are 4,400 military personnel and 2,900 civilians working at the Naval Air Station.
