With more adults being deployed to Point Mugu as part of military consolidation efforts, officials said there are more children than the existing 20-year-old center that can accommodate. ``The current center is small and we've kind of strained our facilities,'' said spokeswoman Teri Reid. ``We just need more room to accommodate the children of military and civilian employees, and to offer different types of activities.'' Ground was broken Tuesday on the new facility, and construction is to begin next week. The federal government is paying for the single-story 10,000-square-foot center that is slated to open in March.
