CENTER GIVEN AMISTAD AWARD WORK AIDS LATINO RESIDENTS.

The city of Santa Clarita's Community Center was named Organization of the Year during the annual Excelencia Awards gala held Sept. 9.

The community center was presented with the Amistad award for dedication in service of the Latino population in Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  at the ceremony, which was hosted by the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Chamber of Commerce's Hispanic Business Hispanic Business, Inc. is a media company based in Santa Barbara, California, in the United States of America. Founded by Jesús Chavarría in 1979, Hispanic Business, Inc. publishes information for and about Hispanic professionals and entrepreneurs.  Committee.

The gala featured live entertainment, dinner, awards and guest speaker Joe Kapp Joseph Robert Kapp (born March 19, 1939[1] in Santa Fe, New Mexico) is a Hispanic former professional American and Canadian football player. Kapp is also a former college football head coach of the University of California, Berkeley, and a former general manager of the , the first Latino inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame. Mayor Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he
 read a proclamation declaring Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month.

The community center was nominated alongside several other local businesses and organizations for the Organization of the Year honor. The center opened in 1994 and is at 24406 San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  in Newhall.

The mission of the community center is to ``serve, support, and respond to the community by providing fun and educational programs in a fun and safe environment.'' About 95 percent of participants are Latino.

The center offers numerous programs for youngsters and families including boxing, ballet folklorico, art classes, teen support groups and homework help.

``We are so proud that our community center and its staff were recognized for their dedication to serving the community,'' said Hope Horner, community center supervisor.
