CENTEL, SPRINT AND MOTOROLA FORM JOINT VENTURE TO BID ON COLOMBIAN CELLULAR LICENSE

CENTEL, SPRINT AND MOTOROLA FORM JOINT VENTURE
TO BID ON COLOMBIAN CELLULAR LICENSE
CHICAGO, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Centel Cellular Company, Sprint Corp. (NYSE: FON) and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), announced today that they have formed a joint venture with E. McAllister, a Colombian corporation, to bid for one of four cellular licenses to be awarded to serve Colombia. The joint venture will be called Telecelular de Colombia, S.A.
For purposes of bid preparation, Motorola will perform technical studies and design for the cellular system. McAllister will act as liaison with the Colombian government and prepare bids. If awarded the bid, Centel will manage the cellular communications systems that will serve a population in major Colombian cities, including Bogota, in excess of 4 million. Sprint, which is active in worldwide voice, video and data services, will hold a minority investment interest in the venture.
"There is tremendous opportunity for growth in Latin American markets," said John P. Frazee Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Centel Corporation (NYSE: CNT). "Through our association with Motorola and McAllister, we believe that we can provide outstanding service to the residents of Colombia. Our joint bid with Sprint demonstrates one of the many synergies that will exist in the new Sprint Corporation upon completion of the merger with Centel."
"We see this as the first of a number of international opportunities to leverage Sprint's worldwide reputation in the data and voice long distance business, Centel's cellular operations knowledge and Motorola's international respect as the leader in wireless technology," said William T. Esrey, chairman and chief executive officer of Sprint.
This is the second international cellular joint venture between Motorola and Centel. Since 1990, both companies have been involved in a joint venture with TelNorte to provide cellular communications service in northern Mexico.
Centel Corporation, which had 1991 revenues of $1.2 billion, provides local exchange telephone service through 1.6 million access lines in six states and manages cellular communications franchises in 42 metropolitan markets in the United States and in more than 50 rural service areas.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.9 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long-distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular subscriber products, infrastructure equipment and systems. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems components and services for worldwide markets.
