CEMIG Picks Simware's Salvo to Web-Enable Customer Service Applications.

Simware Inc. The company's Department of Informatics is using Salvo to provide a link between customers' Web browsers and CEMIG's customer service and billing applications running on a central mainframe. "The new system saves customers a lot of time," says Vicente Moura, IT superintendent for the $3 billion utility which serves 4.2 million customers in the state of Minas Gerais. "By selecting the customer service icon on our home page, they can easily request a second copy of a lost bill, change the name on the account, check the current status of the account and the monthly account history (including posted and pending payments) and request street lamp repairs."

Formerly, customers had to call service agents on the phone or go to one of CEMIG's 150 local offices in person to speak with a representative. Both alternatives frequently required waiting in long lines In communications, circuits that are capable of handling transmissions over long distances. . Now, customers can request changes 24 hours a day from home, office or laptop.

CEMIG is rolling out the new Salvo-based customer service system now in several test cities. The company plans to have the system in place within the next year in the more than 700 cities and towns in the state. CEMIG is also testing service kiosks incorporating the new system in four locations. Future plans call for adding new choices to the service menu, as well as incorporating automated payment methods.

"We tested several Web connectivity products from several vendors before choosing Simware," comments Moura. "Salvo was the clear winner based on the faster response time of the software in actual Web use, plus the great support we received from Simware's Brazilian agent, Octus."
