The men, dressed in kilts, were part of the second annual Celtic Lands Fair held at the Oxnard Community Center.

The heavy-throwing sports included tossing a hammer that weighs either 16 or 22 pounds, throwing a heavy stone shot-put style or flipping a ``small'' caber, a 16-foot-3-inch tree trunk that weighs 88 pounds.

``It's not something you see everywhere, some guy flipping a small telephone pole end over end,'' said August Cederstrand of Brea.

In another event, competitors tried to toss a 56-pound weight over a high-jump bar.

Cederstrand became interested in the Scottish sports about four years ago.

``It's just the challenge of trying to throw some of these objects,'' he said.

``We're looking to promote the sport overall,'' Clewis said.

Approximately 200 people performed in the festival this year, including competitors, singers and dancers, said Andrew Voth, the event's founder and director.

Voth started the event for people of Irish and Scottish descent after witnessing the success of festivals of other cultures in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

``We felt there was a big need for it,'' he said. ``No one else was doing anything like it.''

This year's fair featured a 16th-century Scottish encampment, clothing and crafts, and homemade treats like shepherd's pie shep·herd's pie

``They'll come away with an appreciation of the history and the culture and the music,'' he said.
