CHICAGO, Nov. 18 ~PRNewswire~ -- Cellular One of Chicago~Gary today is launching a major expansion of its cellular information services with the debut of six new lines. As a holiday gift, Cellular One customers can call the company's information services free of any airtime charges during December.
The new live services offer everything from weather tips to legal advice:
 (STAR)LAW (Star-5-2-9) Legal advice
 (STAR)4CAST (Star-4-2-2-7-8) Weather information
(STAR)RPT (Star-7-7-8) To report traffic conditions
 (always a free call)
(STAR)LOTTO (Star-5-6-8-8-6) Winning state lottery numbers
 (STAR)VIP (Star-8-4-7) A re-introduction of Cellular
 One's newly enhanced

 (STAR)INV (Star-4-6-8) Up-to-the-minute financial

 (available Dec. 15)
"Since our customers today are using their mobile phones for personal convenience and safety, as well as for business, we're striving to provide an even broader range of information," said Donna Morrison, director of marketing and corporate communications for Cellular One. "With the average daily commute in Chicago in excess of an hour and a half, our customers can access these services to make even more efficient use of their mobile time."
"As soon as I leave my garage I dial (STAR)123 for a traffic report -- the tips help me find the quickest route to work," said Cellular One customer Sylvia Margolies of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. "Plus, I'm never worried about being lost in unfamiliar territories with this service." Cellular one's (STAR)123 provides up-to-the-minute traffic news and help with directions.
A popular service is Cellular One's existing (STAR)SPORT, a live sports line. Originally intended to provide scores, it's mushroomed into the equivalent of being "at the stadium" for many callers. "Customers call up and literally want a play-by-play of a sports event they can't catch on TV," said David Schuster of Conor Communications, which provides the service in cooperation with Cellular One.
Cellular phone customers access the information services by dialing a star, plus the service's abbreviated name. For most of the information lines, callers are charged only their regular airtime charge.
Cellular One, an operating unit of Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems, gained the freedom to offer information services in 1991, when federal court rulings allowed them to enter the business. Previously, the Bell companies had been forbidden from offering these services under the Modification of Judgment (MFJ).
Cellular One of Chicago~Gary is the premier cellular telecommunications provider for thousands of customers in Chicago, central Illinois and northwest Indiana.
 CELLULAR ONE
 NEW INFORMATION LINES
(STAR)LAW: Avoid Hourly Legal Fees in Your Car
Cellular One subscribers can now access legal advice on their cellular phones quickly and efficiently -- and without incurring the usual hourly legal rate for just a few questions.
Cellular One's (STAR)LAW is a first-of-its-kind live legal service made available through a cellular carrier. The service is provided by the Chicago-based law firm of Levin & Ginsburg. The service is co- sponsored by Tele-Lawyer of California.
By dialing (STAR)LAW, callers reach the law firm directly and are transferred to a veteran lawyer with expertise in the area of law covered by their question. Callers are charged $25 per call by the law firm plus regular Cellular One airtime charges. (STAR)LAW is available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The key to Cellular One's (STAR)LAW service, explained Managing Partner Bob Levin, is the firm's commitment to quality and its use of an extremely sophisticated database, developed by Tele-Lawyer. "Because the database is written in a layperson's terms, not legalese," said Levin, "information is found and relayed very quickly so that there's no 'idle time' for the caller."
With access to state and federal laws, on every major legal issue, the (STAR)LAW service can handle both business and consumer-oriented legal questions. Levin predicts that questions will range from issues of business to divorce to taxes.
With a set fee, (STAR)LAW offers a sound economical option for Cellular One customers seeking legal advice or a second opinion. "There's been a shift in the legal service market," said Levin. "People want to know up front how much their legal services will cost."
Levin & Ginsburg, founded in 1979, provides a broad range of legal services to entrepreneurs and privately held businesses.
(STAR)INV: Track the Dow's Ups and Downs on the Go
On Dec. 15, 1992, busy Cellular One customers will be able to dial (STAR)INV to gain real-time information about their investments on a daily basis. The service, provided in cooperation with financial information firm Jamieson & Lee Inc. is a first in Chicago.
"Other quotation services only provide a fraction of the information available through (STAR)INV," said Dennis Schermerhorn, spokesman for Jamieson & Lee.
By dialing (STAR)INV, Cellular One callers use easy step-by-step menus to access real-time information on any United States-listed stocks, mutual funds, money market funds, futures, options and indexes. Cellular One callers pay only their regular airtime charge to use the service, which is available 22 hours a day, seven days a week. ({STAR}INV is closed two hours a day, from 2-4 a.m. Central time.)
(STAR)INV goes beyond pre-recorded market reports, and instead provides last-traded price, change from previous close, bid price, ask price and volume information -- all on a real-time basis.
"With more than 51 million shareholders in the United States, there's a high demand for real-time financial information," Schermerhorn said. Barrington, Illinois-based Jamieson & Lee, specializes in developing software for the financial industry.
(STAR)4CAST: Get the Latest Weather News on a Car Phone
In Chicago especially, the weather changes from minute to minute. Now motorists can get the latest scoop on weather conditions with Cellular One's (STAR)4CAST, a weather hotline. The service, available weekdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., links car phone callers with a live weather technician or meteorologist.
Callers pay only their regular airtime charge to use (STAR)4CAST, which is provided in cooperation with Weather Command, of the private meteorological consulting firm Murray & Trettel Inc.
"Unlike the periodic weather updates on the radio, (STAR)4CAST provides Cellular One subscribers with the most up-to-the-minute weather news possible -- and it's right at their fingertips," said Tom Piazza, executive vice president of the firm. Callers can obtain current weather conditions for Chicago or any United States city, 90-day forecasts, and even climatological information.
Piazza predicts that Cellular One customers will use (STAR)4CAST to check weather conditions while heading to the airport or to local business appointments.
Northfield-based Murray and Trettel's state-of-the-art meteorological equipment includes two satellite ground stations, which provide color radar, satellite images and thousands of real-time weather observations.
(STAR)VIP: Plan a Night Out While Stuck in Traffic
Cellular One customers can now plan an entire evening of entertainment without leaving their cars or from their hand-held phones. The company is re-introducing its (STAR)VIP information line. The newly enhanced (STAR)VIP links callers with a live professional concierge service, provided in cooperation with Conor Communications.
The service offered ranges from simple requests such as restaurant reservations, limousine services, event tickets and group tours; to more complicated requests for personal shopping, weekend getaways and meetings and party planning. (STAR)VIP is available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Callers pay only their regular airtime charges to use the service.
"We are an elite group of professionals dedicated to meeting the special demands of your business and personal life," said Catherine Kirk, vice president of Conor Concierge Services. "Since we have a myriad of unique contacts, we can fill your every request -- from the commonplace to the complicated." In addition, Conor can later send Cellular One customers reservation confirmations and customized maps via facsimile. Kirk predicts that callers will use the service to help make plans for business contacts and to make their personal lives run smoother as well.
Chicago-based Conor Communications, established in 1987, is an information provider on a variety of topics.
(STAR)RPT: Swap Traffic Tales with Fellow Motorists
Cellular One customers can now assume the role of traffic reporter by dialing (STAR)RPT to report traffic conditions for any expressway, tollway or major city or suburban roads to a live operator.
To encourage "cellular samaritans," the call is free to Cellular One customers. The (STAR)RPT line is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight.
"With as many as 300,000 cars on any one expressway in a given day, it represents a vast army of on-the-screen reporters," said Jim Sharpe, director of operations for the service provider, Metro Traffic Control.
(STAR)RPT works in conjunction with another existing Cellular One service, (STAR)123, also provided by Metro Traffic. Cellular One subscribers dial (STAR)123 to receive live traffic reports and directions if they're lost. The up-to-the-minute traffic news reported on (STAR)RPT will be available to all customers who call the (STAR)123 line.
Metro Traffic's Chicago office has access to traffic information from a variety of sources, such as the Illinois Department of Transportation and airborne reporters, plus state and local police departments.
(STAR)LOTTO: Check Your Luck with One Call
If you missed the winning lottery numbers for that $40 million jackpot, just dial Cellular One's (STAR)LOTTO to check your luck. The new service links callers with a live operator who will report the winning numbers and payout information on all Illinois State Lottery games. (STAR)LOTTO also provides information on the Wisconsin and Indiana lotteries. The service is available weekdays from 6 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight.
Cellular One subscribers pay only their regular airtime charge to use (STAR)LOTTO.
"The service will help ease the minds of 'anxious' lottery players," said Larry Lucus of Chicago-based Conor Communications, which provides the service in cooperation with Cellular One.
