CELL PHONES NOT PAR FOR THE COURSE; GOLFERS SAY RINGING A DISTRACTION.

Byline: Brian The name Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) comes from an Irish backround. It is of Celtic origin and its meaning may be "hill" or "strong, noble, and high"[1].  Dalziel Staff Writer

The cell phone's ring came from the back of the golf cart as the foursome stood at the tee box.

One of the players ran over, reached into his golf bag and pulled out his phone. It was work.

He tried his best to keep the conversation quiet, but that didn't satisfy the others, who shook their heads in disgust.

In this busy, get-up-and-go world, we play golf to get away from work. Why, then, do golfers bring their work with them?

``The quietness and stillness is part of the game. That's why people love to play the game,'' said Bob Thomas For the Irish footballer, see .

Most area public courses don't have a policy against cell phones on the course, but many private clubs do.

``Cell phones shouldn't be used on any golf course,'' said Gino Zenobi, general manager at Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena, where a ban on cell phone use on the course was implemented almost two years ago.

``Business should be left out right when you start playing golf.''

Valencia Country Club doesn't have a cell phone policy. But head professional Rick Smith said members should use common sense if they must carry one.

``Our club is a working club, so a lot of guys out here have clients with them and you can't tell them not to conduct business out there,'' Smith said. ``So we encourage our members who have cell phones to put them on vibrate (mode) so it doesn't bother the other players.

``That's the general practice that we encourage people to follow so we don't have to institute a policy.''

But management is monitoring the situation so usage won't be abused.

``It's something we want to monitor,'' Frederick said. ``Situations can occur. It's like speed of play and such. We just review them on an ongoing basis and see how our policies are shaping up. If it's affecting play, we'll make alternative plans to improve the situation.''
