CEI-GREATER CLEVELAND ECOLOGY ASSOCIATION READY FOR SPRING HARVEST
CLEVELAND, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI) and Greater Cleveland Ecology Association (GCEA) are preparing for spring harvest at the leaf recycling center located at CEI's Lake Shore Power Plant, 6800 S. Marginal Rd., Cleveland.
Today through March 26, a giant grinding machine will turn more than 8000 tons of leaves into garden humus. This soil conditioner will be sold by the GCEA to area landscapers and at local nurseries.
More than 16,000 tons of leaves are deposited annually at the site by the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Lynhurst and South Euclid. The leaves are piled in rows 10-feet high and allowed to compost for 24 months.
CEI provides nearly 8.5 acres of land for the leaf recycling center to help Northeast Ohio battle the growing waste disposal problem. Northeast Ohio communities, which are members of GCEA, can dispose of leaves at the Lake Shore recycling center free of charge, but they must jointly provide heavy equipment needed to aerate the leaves periodically and maintain the site.
