CEI OFFERS TIPS TO WEATHER SPRING STORMS

CLEVELAND, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Although springtime brings warmer weather, it also brings spring storms.
Heavy rains, lightning and high winds -- all characteristic of spring storms -- can topple utility poles and power lines and interrupt electric service. The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI) offers the following guidelines for customers who may experience an interruption of service:
-- Check first to see if neighbors are also without power. If not, the problem may be a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker in your home.
-- Call CEI to report a power outage. Customers in the Greater Cleveland calling area should dial 216-861-9000; for customers in Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula and Lorain counties, the toll free number is 800-589-3101. If lines are busy, please wait a few minutes and try again. Your call is the only sure way for CEI to know you are without power.
-- Customers who see a fallen power line should stay away from it and be sure to keep children and pets out of the area. Never attempt to move or touch a downed line. Call CEI immediately to report the location; if lines are busy, call your local police or fire department.
-- Keep in mind that service restoration is done on a priority basis. Hazards to public safety, "dependent" customers, public service agencies and public gathering places receive highest priority. Those customers who rely on electricity for medical treatment or life support are included on a special listing kept on file at CEI. Customers with eligible medical equipment should call CEI for information about this important service.
-- Turn off major appliances. In rare cases, power surges may follow power outages. Leave one light on to determine when power has been restored.
-- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Food keeps for many hours if door-opening and closing is kept to a minimum.
-- Keep a battery-powered radio and flashlight handy. If extreme weather conditions are expected, CEI does its best to inform the public of prolonged outages so that additional measures may be taken by customers.
It's important to remember that serious spring storms place severe demands on CEI's restoration crews. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
