CEI ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF RECHARGEABLE ELECTRIC LAWN MOWERS

CLEVELAND, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mowing the lawn will be pollution-free starting Thursday, June 24, for 60 Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company customers who will participate in the company's new environmental program called CLEANER LawnCare.
The program kicked off on April 6 when applications were sent to all CEI residential customers. Sixty winners were randomly selected from more than 12,500 applicants. The winners will trade-in their old, pollution-belching lawn mowers and pay only $100 for a new cordless electric lawn mower.
Trade-in locations will be on Cleveland's Public Square between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and again between 3 and 7 p.m., and at the company's Concord Service Center, 7757 Auburn Rd., Painesville, and Ashtabula Service Center, 2210 So. Ridge W., Ashtabula, between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m. CEI and Black & Decker representatives will be on hand to provide operating demonstrations.
CEI's CLEANER LawnCare program is designed to replace old gasoline- powered mowers with new cordless electric lawnmowers which produce no emissions. It is sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute, the Edison Electric Institute and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Powered by a 12-volt battery, the LawnCare mowers will cut about a quarter acre of grass on a single charge. Recharging time is about three hours. Recharging costs are less than $5 for an entire mowing season.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a typical gasoline-powered lawn mower running for an hour creates the same emissions as driving a car about 50 miles. Many of the gasoline mowers traded in will be donated to the EPA for further fuel consumption and emissions testing. Mowers not given to the EPA will be recycled.

/EDITOR'S NOTE: About 40 cordless electric lawn mowers will be assembled and awaiting pick up on Thursday, June 24, on Cleveland's Public Square as CEI's CLEANER LawnCare program gets underway. CEI customers selected to participate in the program will drop off their old gasoline powered mowers, cut some of the grass on Public Square with the cordless electric mower, and receive a CLEANER LawnCare T-shirt./
