(R)) President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Gary Shapiro issued the following statement today regarding computer manufacturer Dell's recall of batteries sold with certain models of their notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous. :

"While the number of incidents thus far has been relatively low, Dell and its manufacturing partners have been incredibly responsive and are going well beyond expectations in this circumstance.

"While we can't foresee any additional recalls of Li-ion batteries in laptops or other consumer electronics devices, it is heartening heart·en

to see that our industry is moving quickly to protect consumers from even the rare circumstance that may result in hazardous conditions."

The lightweight, but powerful lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have been used in millions of laptops and other consumer electronics devices built and sold over the last several years, replacing Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) A rechargeable battery technology that is widely used for portable hand tools. It uses a nickel and cadmium plate and potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte. Originally invented in Sweden in 1899, it became popular in the 1950s after a sealed version was developed.  (NiCd) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) A rechargeable battery technology that has approximately 30-50% more charge per pound than nickel cadmium. Introduced in the early 1990s, it uses nickel and metal hydride plates with potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte.  (NiMh), older alternatives that don't generally perform as well. Given the number of Li-ion batteries in use today, failures resulting in hazardous conditions are extremely rare.

CEA recommends that consumers with questions or concerns about the safety of their consumer electronics products contact the product manufacturer directly.
