Distributed Networks Inc. (Dinet), has received its first order for Data Mates with CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) A low-speed, digital, wireless data network that is an enhancement to an existing analog cellular network. Based on IBM's CelluPlan II, CDPD provides a packet overlay onto the AMPS network and moves data at 19.  software.

CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data (communications, protocol) Cellular Digital Packet Data - (CDPD) A wireless standard providing two-way, 19.2 kbps packet data transmission over exisiting cellular telephone channels. ) allows the Data Mate to interface to cellular systems.

Dinet, which is located in Oceanside, Calif., designs and markets digital wireless communication equipment and software to mobile fleet owners to enable them to more efficiently manage their operations which includes important functions such as the expedient dispatching of fleet vehicles and onboard inventory control. At present there are nine Data Mate models to choose from and a variety of options including GPS and credit card readers. Since January Dinet has substantially strengthened its software staff which in a short period of time produced a very competitive mapping software package for GPS, and is developing a number of new products that will be ready to market in the next three to 12 months.

CDPD takes advantage of the cellular design by using idle times between voice calls to deliver packets of data. The Data Mate delivers a 250 character message in less than a second which is a huge savings for users compared to cellular voice transmissions. The bonus for the provider is the use of more air time thereby generating more revenues. The interest by providers is evidenced by the rapid growth of installation of CDPD in major cities. In 1995 there were approximately 50 cities that supported CDPD, it is estimated that by the end of 1996 there will be 350 cities on line. Projections are, there will be over 16 million cellular business subscribers by 1999 with CDPD enjoying the strongest annual growth of more than 25%.

The Data Mate with the GPS option allows fleet owners to transmit information and to track their vehicles anywhere in the country or the world where there is a seamless cellular system with CDPD. There are existing competitors such as in long haul Long distance. Long haul implies traversing a state or a country. Contrast with short haul.  trucking, but the equipment is much more expensive than Dinet products.

The summer months are very busy for the cement industry and it is difficult to get their attention. However, we have entered into other markets which include plumbing, and we are expanding our presence in the taxi industry to mention a few. As a result, preliminary figures indicate this will be a record quarter for the company. Also, fiscal year 1997 is shaping up as a year that will significantly surpass our past performance."
