CDPD Forum publishes Release 1.1 CDPD System Specification; Technology delivered on-time and ready for immediate implementation.CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1995--The CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) A low-speed, digital, wireless data network that is an enhancement to an existing analog cellular network. Based on IBM's CelluPlan II, CDPD provides a packet overlay onto the AMPS network and moves data at 19. Forum (cellular digital packet data (communications, protocol) Cellular Digital Packet Data - (CDPD) A wireless standard providing two-way, 19.2 kbps packet data transmission over exisiting cellular telephone channels. ) today published Release 1.1 of its CDPD System Specification and accompanying Implementor Guidelines, marking a significant milestone in the growth of CDPD technology and the wireless computing industry. The new release incorporates the current CDPD technology and establishes a foundation for long term growth. With Release 1.1, the carriers will be able to achieve interoperability more quickly and to deploy new systems rapidly. CDPD users realize greater performance via features that make more economical use of the air link. Because CDPD is built on existing LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. and WAN standards, CDPD provides easier connectivity to corporate LANs and leverages the existing cellular infrastructures. Release 1.1 was announced January 20 at the CDPD Forum quarterly membership meeting in Tampa, Fla. The Specification and Implementor Guidelines provide common, well-defined standards to allow hardware manufacturers, service providers, infrastructure providers, software vendors, system integrators and value added resellers See VAR. (company) value added reseller - (VAR, or "value added retailer") A company which sells something (e.g. computers) made by another company (an OEM) with extra components added (e.g. specialist software). to create fully interoperable products and solutions. Each of these diverse groups are represented in the Forum membership. ``This specification represents the CDPD Forum's commitment to grow the CDPD marketplace and to ensure a viable, nationwide cellular network,'' said Terry S. Parker, CDPD Forum chairman and president of GTE GTE General Telephone & Electronics GTE Génie Thermique et Énergie (French) GTE Gas Turbine Engine GTE Global Tropospheric Experiment GTE Geothermal Energy GTE Gas Turbine Efficiency plc (Sweden & USA) Personal Communications Services See PCS. . ``The new release will accelerate CDPD deployment and interoperability, capitalizing on the strength of existing cellular industry standards and the significant corporate investment in the cellular industry.'' The Specification was developed by a team of CDPD experts that represent the depth and diversity of the CDPD market. ``The entire spec development process demonstrates the commitment and cohesion of the leading carriers and product and service providers,'' noted Rand Baldwin, Executive Director of the Forum. ``The spec also benefitted from current customer experience and new requirements that have emerged from implementation,'' added Mark Taylor People known as Mark Taylor include:
Release 1.1 features highlighted at the meeting: o New optional V.42 bis data compression data compression Process of reducing the amount of data needed for storage or transmission of a given piece of information (text, graphics, video, sound, etc.), typically by use of encoding techniques. provides data transfer at up to three times existing speed, resulting in better utilization of the air link and increased performance. o New CDPD and IP multicast A one-to-many transmission of data over an IP network. It is used for a myriad of purposes including updating routers, announcing and discovering services and streaming media. IP multicast saves network bandwidth, because packets are transmitted as one stream over the backbone and only services. Multicast provides the ability for the user to send a message to multiple recipients simultaneously. o Information exchange procedures which strengthen the business side of interoperability. For example, enhanced accounting information exchange will simplify billing, summary and settlement. o Enhanced Radio Resource Management, selecting the best authorized radio channel for a mobile end system. The result will be better end-user performance. Release 1.1 will enable CDPD users, suppliers and service providers to build on their current investments. The Implementor Guidelines include an Interoperability Test Plan between service providers, which supports the objective of providing uninterrupted service to customers traveling across service provider boundaries. Meeting Highlights The CDPD Forum Membership meeting was preceded by a one-day tutorial on CDPD and Release 1.1. The meeting included more than 175 member representatives. Forum leaders highlighted new capabilities in Release 1.1. Member committees reported their plans for member products and programs in 1995. Member committees include: Interoperability, Technical SIG Management, Accounting, Member Benefits, Member Recruitment and Programs and Content.
