CDG Celebrates One-Year Anniversary Of CDMA2000 Commercial Deployment; More Than 1.5 Million Users Today Access 3G Services With CDMA2000.Business Editors & High-Tech Writers SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 2001 The CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. Development Group (CDG (CDMA Development Group, Costa Mesa, CA, www.cdg.org) A membership organization founded in 1995 that promotes CDMA wireless systems worldwide. It is involved with developing new features and services and promoting standards that provide global compatibility and interoperability. ) (www.cdg.org), today celebrated the first anniversary of commercial deployment of CDMA2000, an International Telecommunication Union International Telecommunication Union (ITU), specialized agency of the United Nations, with headquarters at Geneva. It was created in 1934 as a result of the merging of the International Telegraph Union (est. (ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks. ) approved 3G standard. SK Telecom and LG Telecom of Korea launched their CDMA2000 networks last October, and KT Freetel of Korea rolled out its services in April of this year. Fifteen additional operators worldwide will deploy CDMA2000 services in the next six months. Today, there are more than 1.5 million CDMA2000 subscribers in Korea and this number will grow exponentially in the coming months. In two years, analysts forecast that 70 percent of Korea's subscribers could be using CDMA2000. The advanced services powered by CDMA2000, such as full-color video, Internet broadcasts and animation, generate 40 percent more revenue for operators. Additionally, there are 24 different handsets available now and more will be released in the upcoming months. "The commercial success of CDMA2000 is very positive for the industry and proves that 3G can deliver on its promise," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "CDMA2000 was the first to market with 3G services. It leads in the market today and will continue to dominate in coming years as more operators launch their networks around the world and more products and services become available." One of the key advantages of CDMA2000 is its spectrum and standard flexibility. CDMA2000 can be deployed in existing cellular or PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1. bands not only by cdmaOne(TM) operators but by TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA). , analog, GSM and newly licensed 3G carriers as well. And, CDMA2000 requires only 1.25MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. of spectrum so operators can introduce 3G services while preserving most of the network capacity for the core voice services. CDMA2000 1X, the technology deployed today, supports data speeds of up to 144kbps and doubles network capacity. The next generations of CDMA2000 will bring even greater data speeds and capacity improvements, allowing support of more advanced multimedia services. For example, the recently recognized CDMA2000 1xEV-DO standard will deliver applications at 2.4Mbps and will be commercially launched in the middle of next year. The CDMA Development Group is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of cdmaOne and CDMA2000.
