CDC declares end of canine rabies in U.S.


Federal health officials have formally declared the elimination of the type of rabies rabies (rā`bēz, ră`–) or hydrophobia (hī'drəfō`bēə), acute viral infection of the central nervous system in dogs, foxes, raccoons, skunks, bats, and other animals, and in  previously found in dogs in the United States.

"(The elimination of canine-to-canine rabies) represents one of the major public health success stories of the last 50 years," said Charles Rupprecht, VMD VMD [L.] Veterina´riae Medici´nae Doc´tor (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine).

The Sept. 7 announcement also highlighted World Rabies Day World Rabies Day is a global initiative to raise awareness about the continuing burden of Rabies and how the disease can be prevented. The inaugural World Rabies Day took place on September 8, 2007 with the goal of building the political will necessary to end rabies. , a global effort to celebrate successes in domestic rabies control and prevention as well as recognition of the challenge of global canine rabies elimination, human rabies prevention and wildlife rabies control.
