CDC Researchers Find New Use for Nymox's NicAlert(TM) Product.HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. -- Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on : NYMX NYMX New York Mercantile Exchange ) announced today that researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center. (CDC See Control Data, century date change and Back Orifice. CDC - Control Data Corporation ) reported developing a potential new use for Nymox's NicAlert(TM) product: the pre-classifying of samples prior to analysis by state-of-the-art mass spectroscopy testing (Journal of Analytical Toxicology November/December, 2005; 29: 814-818). The authors of the new NicAlert(TM) study, John T. Bernert, Tia Harmon and James McGuffey of the CDC's Tobacco Exposure Biomarkers Laboratory, coupled NicAlert(TM) testing with image scanning and processing software in order to provide more quantitative cotinine cotinine (kō´tinēn), n a substance that remains in body fluids after nicotine has been used. Presence of this chemical in body fluids is considered proof of recent nicotine use. measurements in the urine of individuals exposed to second-hand smoke and tobacco products. The resulting NicAlert(TM) measurements correlated well with the far more sophisticated testing (LC/MS/MS) used in the CDC laboratory. The authors also noted this method of NicAlert(TM) testing may also be helpful in smoking cessation and other studies. Nymox's NicAlert(TM) and TobacAlert(TM) products employ the Company's patented technology in order to provide quick, accurate, on-site measurements of cotinine levels in urine without the need for instruments or special training. Cotinine is a metabolite metabolite, organic compound that is a starting material in, an intermediate in, or an end product of metabolism. Starting materials are substances, usually small and of simple structure, absorbed by the organism as food. of nicotine that is widely accepted and used in epidemiological and medical studies for determining tobacco use and exposure. NicAlert(TM) received clearance from the U.S. FDA FDA abbr. Food and Drug Administration FDA, n.pr See Food and Drug Administration. TobacAlert(TM) allows consumers to assess their level of second hand smoke exposure and is available at the approximately 5,400 CVS/pharmacy(R) stores across the U.S. as well as online at www.cvs.com. Other independent peer-reviewed studies have also found the technology employed in NicAlert(TM) to be an accurate, rapid and cost-effective means of confirming smoking status in the clinic. One study, "Validating a Dipstick dipstick /dipĀ·stick/ (dipĀ“stik) a strip of cellulose chemically impregnated to render it sensitive to protein, glucose, or other substances in the urine. Method for Detecting Recent Smoking," Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention (2002; 11: 1123-1125) examined the smoking status of patients at a cancer clinic and found that the results obtained using Nymox's tobacco product exposure test had an "excellent agreement" with state-of-the-art sophisticated laboratory measurements but at a substantially lower cost (over 90% less). The second study, "The Accuracy of Self-Reported Smoking Status Assessed by Cotinine Test Strips," Nicotine & Tobacco Research (2002; 4: 305-9) found Nymox's product to be "an inexpensive and rapid method to routinely biochemically confirm smoking status at a clinical visit." The authors described the Nymox product as a "simple, inexpensive and rapid measure to immediately confirm smoking status in field settings."
