CDC Foundation Names Director of Knight Journalism Fellowships at CDC.

Carol Gentry, a reporter on the health desk for The Wall Street Journal, has been tapped to direct the CDC See Control Data, century date change and Back Orifice.

Gentry will oversee the administration of the program, which allows six mid-career journalists to spend four months experiencing public health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  and at local health departments. The first class of Knight Fellows will train alongside CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service The Epidemic Intelligence Service is a program of the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Established in 1951 due to biological warfare concerns arising from the Korean War, it has become a hands-on two-year postgraduate training program in epidemiology, with  (EIS (1) (Executive Information System) An information system that consolidates and summarizes ongoing transactions within the organization. It provides top management with all the information it requires at all times from internal and external sources. ) officers beginning in July.

A veteran of health and medical reporting, Gentry has received numerous awards for news, investigative and feature journalism. Prior to joining the Journal in 1997, she served as commentator for National Public Radio's "Marketplace," senior medical reporter for the St. Petersburg Times

Gentry spent two years as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Bogota, Colombia, teaching in rural areas and conducting social work in squatter camps. She is a former Kaiser Foundation Fellow at Harvard University, where she also earned a master's in public administration degree.

 Foundation.
