CD reviews.Clea: Trinity Clea were always going to be utter rubbish. For a start, they can't even spell their own name properly, and for such mutilation Mutilation See also Brutality, Cruelty. Secondly, they have terrible song titles, like Eanie Meanie (yuk), We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off (pass the sick bag) and Pretty Little Bad Girl (I've just vomited all over myself). I can't even bring myself to pass comment on the music. Oh go on, you've twisted my arm. It sounds like Atomic Kitten, but 10 times blander, and with even worse lyrics. On the sixth circle of hell, they'll play this on eternal repeat to punish all the musical heretics. Like Clea. THOMAS BAGNALL Thea Gilmore: Harpo's Ghost This talented British solo artist has been described as music's best-kept secret and it is her commendable desire for complete creative freedom that keeps her this way. Gilmore has no qualms about voicing her opinions and her sweet, smooth voice shrouds her not-so-innocent lyrics. This album is a rare gem. Gilmore sings every word with passion and meaning; her ability to write thought-provoking lyrics and haunting harmonies is exceptional. This type of talent should not be oppressed but whilst the larger record companies insist on controlling every aspect of an artist, great home-grown talent like this will go unrecognised. KATE BROWN Officer Kicks : Underrub Hailing from New Cross and Greenwich, Officer Kicks bring us a catchy song which starts with a baseline which instantly hooks its listeners and drives on throughout the song. This band are definitely worth a listen. It's music for bozos, idiots and the deaf. THOMAS BAGNALL Charlotte Gainsbourg: The Songs That We Sing Only a voice as beautiful and sultry as Charlotte Gainsbourg's could carry off the vibrant mood of The Songs That We Sing. Including an extremely catchy theme along with memorable and lovable lyrics, a relaxed tone is brought to the indie table with a great deal of wisdom that thankfully does not come across as arrogance. A must-be-heard! ALEXANDER HOPE Obie Trice: Snitch If the success of 50 cent is anything to go by, surviving a few bullets is a surefire way to get a golden career in gangster rap. Obie Trice has certainly got the qualifications for such a career after being shot twice while driving in Detroit. Astonishingly a·ston·ish tr.v. as·ton·ished, as·ton·ish·ing, as·ton·ish·es To fill with sudden wonder or amazement. See Synonyms at surprise. , one of these bullets is still lodged in his head, although obviously not affecting his ability to whack out hard-hitting lyrics. His experiences are what shapes this track and his understandable paranoia is visible. Obie has a clear belief in sticking together no matter what but the violent undercurrent of this song is perhaps not appropriate. KATE BROWN |
