CCTV bid to track down bank raiders; POLICE APPEAL TO PUBLIC TO HELP CATCH ROBBERS.

THIS is the terrifying moment masked raiders struck at a Tyneside bank.

The pair burst in with balaclavas and hoods hiding their faces and attacked two security guards as they loaded up a cash machine.

A hero policeman who tried to intervene also came under attack at the Abbey National bank in North Shields.

 pictures in a bid to trace the culprits, who were armed with a wrench and a brick.

Det Sgt Alan Godfrey, of North Shields CID Cid or Cid Campeador (sĭd, Span. thēth kämpāäthōr`) [Span.,=lord conqueror], d. 1099, Spanish soldier and national hero, whose real name was Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar.  said: "We're asking the public for their help in identifying the people in the photo.

"If you think you recognise either man, then please call us straight away.

"All information will be treated in the strictest confidence."

The robbers struck at the bank, on Bedford Street, North Shields, and grabbed a cashbox from two security guards as they loaded up the ATM machine.

A passing police officer on patrol in the area bravely tried to intervene but was overpowered by the raiders.

But he gave chase down Bedford Street and on to Little Bedford Street where he managed to retrieve the cashbox.

Police say the pair of robbers fled in a stolen Rover 414, which had two other men in it.

The robbery took place just before 9pm on Friday, January 30, and police want to hear from anyone who can help their investigation.

The getaway car had been stolen shortly before 7pm that same Friday evening, from Lambourne Avenue in Longbenton.

It was abandoned shortly after the robbery around 9pm at Royal Quays.

, also attended the incident and helped their colleague.

As well as trying to trace the two men in the picture, police are also appealing for witnesses to the car being stolen in Longbenton and driven around the North Shields area between 7pm and 9pm, when it was abandoned.

Police say one of the robbers wore a black shiny tracksuit-type anorak top with the hood up and matching tracksuit track·suit
