PC-Based Impact Analysis Tool Provides Major Savings In Human and
System Resources for Large-Scale Maintenance Projects
CCD Online Systems Inc., a worldwide provider of software tools and services for mainframe, enterprise maintenance projects, Tuesday announced MegaChange(TM) for fast, accurate impact assessment and data field changes in legacy systems.
The PC-based impact analysis tool helps organizations save time and resources by automatically implementing changes on large-scale maintenance projects.

Based on technology developed for CCD's family of successful Year 2000 compliance tools, Beyond 1999/Y2K(TM) and Beyond 1999/Validate(TM), MegaChange's powerful enterprise impact assessment engine quickly finds virtually all fields that would be impacted by a proposed change.
MegaChange is designed to manage data field changes where the legacy systems of two or more organizations need to be combined for interactivity, the integration of third-party software, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
Impact analysis quickly identifies legacy system components that need to be extended to the Web. Ideal applications for MegaChange include corporate mergers and acquisitions, the standardization of codes for use by insurance companies and the health-care industry, or the integration of two or more customer databases with differing data fields. MegaChange can automatically find, assess and convert fields in applications written in COBOL and PL/I.
Better Resource Management on Large-scale Maintenance Projects
Because it is easy to install, learn and use, MegaChange provides significant cost and time savings for organizations facing on-going, large-scale maintenance projects resulting from modifications in data field size, including financial data, phone numbers, addresses and account numbers.
MegaChange provides additional savings because it is Microsoft Windows PC-based, and does not compete for expensive mainframe resources during maintenance projects.
How MegaChange Works
For example, if a company needs to expand a name and address field within an IMS database from 25 positions to 40 positions, MegaChange finds every occurrence of those fields, all the redefinitions, any fields that are impacted and any aliases and names for those fields.
After documenting all statements marked for changes either online or via printed reports, the user has the option to perform updates manually or allow the tool to automatically modify programs and copybooks so that these name and address fields expand from 25 positions to 40 positions.
Since the modifications are done automatically, error rates associated with manual efforts are greatly reduced, resulting in substantial savings in money and resources. MegaChange will then generate COBOL programs to convert files or generate test data.
-- Enterprise Portfolio Assessment: MegaChange provides Enterprise Portfolio Assessment for large-scale maintenance projects to assist IT management in estimating the timeframe, budget and overall scope of the undertaking. Enterprise Portfolio Assessment also includes missing member reports on programs, subprograms, copybooks, DCLGENs, JCL/PROCs (MVS) and DBD/PSB (IMS). -- Source Parser: Parses the source code written in COBOL and PL/I for programs, copybooks, DCLGENs, and IDD records and modules, into an enterprise component repository. It also parses JCL, PROCs, JCL control cards, DBD, PSB, IDCAMS, BMS Mapset, MFS format and CICS tables (PPT, PCT, FCT and RDO). -- Impact Analyzer: MegaChange allows you to define maintenance requirement categories. The Impact Analyzer automatically generates seed fields and propagates each seed through the field-to-field relationships built by the Source Parser to find additional seed candidates. The Online System then makes it easy for you to confirm all seed candidates. -- Enterprise Impact Assessment Module: Allows you to quickly query a field name across the entire repository and display all program statements impacted directly or indirectly by a change. -- Online System: Contains more than 80 screens for performing real-time access, confirmation and updating of information within the repository. All application components and their relationships can be reviewed or updated. The enterprise usage of any data field can also be reviewed. By providing real-time access to this information, MegaChange dramatically improves the efficiency and accuracy of analysis and renovation projects. -- Object Field Expander: Expands all object fields in the repository. The results can be reviewed either online or through printed reports before the physical generation of new code. The original source line is commented out and a new source line is inserted after the original. -- Automatic Source Code Renovator: Automatically applies consistent and accurate field expansion to source programs, copybooks, DCLGEN and IDD members, PSB and DBD members, MVS JCL/PROCs and IDCAMS. MegaChange also lists all program statements that contain literals or are being compared with a literal, as well as BMS Mapset fields for manual correction by your programming staff. -- Data Conversion Program: MegaChange automatically generates a COBOL program which is used to convert QSAM, VSAM and DB2 datasets, with associated copybooks and DCLGENs, to include new field expansion. This component can be used to convert a production file or generate test data.
MegaChange is currently available on a fixed basis for COBOL, PL/I, and IDMS, as well as on a customized basis, which enables companies to configure components for their specific business needs.
