The game was played on January 31, 1999 at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida following the 1998 regular season. .

The Super Bowl sponsors included Philips, which sponsored the Philips' Pick-A-Box Contest. Thousands of contestants selected a box in the scoring grid, which featured prizes including a Philips NINO Ni·ño

Originally, the game was hosted in Tempe, Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium where it remained until 2006.  on January 5, 1999.
