CBL Systems Announces High Performance Fiber Optic Networks Increasing Bandwidth in Control Networks By 400%.

Business/Technology Editors

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 2000

CBL Cbl cobalamin.  Systems, a leading provider of fiber optic control network solutions, today announced the introduction of CBL's high-performance fiber optic networks for LonWorks(R), using Cypress Semiconductor's new 40MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Neuron neuron, specialized cell in animals that, as a unit of the nervous system, carries information by receiving and transmitting electrical impulses.

Chip. Lonworks-based control networks will now benefit from the increased bandwidth of fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber  and achieve data rates 400 % faster than similarly-configured copper-based networks. The announcement is expected to significantly expand usage of both fiber optic networks and the LonWorks platform, which are used in the building, industrial, and process control automation markets as well as aircraft, rail, and other transportation markets.

The increased bandwidth of fiber optic networks enables a millisecond-range response time and accelerates control network bandwidths from 1.25 megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576).

E.g. Ethernet can carry 10 Mbps.
to 5 megabits per second when using the new Cypress chips. The need for faster data transmission in control networks is intensifying as the home, building, and transportation markets become more complex and the numbers of LonWorks-compatible devices increases. With these new products, devices on fiber networks can be bridged more easily and seamlessly to and from the Internet, providing desktop visibility to far-reaching data and control networks in thousands of new applications, wherever fiber's enormous bandwidth and total immunity to interference are critical.

The announcement was made today at the start of LonWorld 2000, the world's largest annual forum focused on the technology and business of using remote intelligent sensors to network and automatically control security and access control systems, fire alarms, HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) In the home or small office with a handful of computers, HVAC is more for human comfort than the machines. In large datacenters, a humidity-free room with a steady, cool temperature is essential for the trouble-free  systems, lighting systems, as well as every day devices in the home. LonWorks control network technology, developed by Echelon(R) Corporation, is the leading open, networked control solution for building, industrial, transportation and public utility automation applications.

"For the first time, LonWorks users can take full advantage of the bandwidth, throughput, reliability and immunity capabilities that fiber optics and LonWorks now offer," said Brian Morrison, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of CBL Systems. "The increased transmission speed will enhance the performance of all control networks, and will make combining data and control networks an attractive option because it overcomes the inherent bandwidth limitations of copper networks. We have achieved a performance breakthrough that should be of great interest to anyone involved in designing and installing LonWorks-based devices and networks."

"Cypress is pleased that CBL has selected our Neuron Chip devices for its new high-speed fiber-based industrial control networking solutions, said Harold Rabbie, senior marketing manager at Cypress Semiconductor Cypress Semiconductor is a semiconductor design and manufacturing company. It began operations in 1982 and listed publicly in 1986. Two years later, the company shifted over to the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol, (NYSE: CY). . "Cypress's superior semiconductor technology has allowed us to raise the bar significantly in terms of processing and communications performance."

Cypress also is introducing the CY7C53120E2 and CY7C53150 Neuron Chips, exact drop-in replacements for legacy Neuron Chip designs. The CY7C53150 Neuron Chip can operate at 20 MHz, twice the speed of earlier devices. It supports up to 58KB of off-chip program and data memory for large, low-cost and high-performance LonWorks applications.

CBL Systems and Cypress Semiconductor are platinum sponsors of LonWorld 2000.

About CBL Systems

CBL Systems Corporation delivers today's most technologically advanced, reliable and affordable distributed fiber optic sensing and control and automation solutions for commercial industries. A leading supplier of fiber networked control solutions, CBL Systems has developed a complete range of off-the-shelf hardware and software products that use the LonWorks and SAE AS-5370 open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced  to build ultra-reliable, fault-tolerant, tamper-proof, fiber-based control networks. CBL System's standard modular transceiver provides the interface that links Neuron(R) (processors in LonWorks nodes to fiber optic backbones, links or networks as well as routers and switches that connect traditional copper networks to fiber optic backbones. CBL Systems markets its Control-By-Light(TM) (products worldwide through distributors and systems integrators in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America.
