CBI sources, the agency has received 53 complaints from the public. Senior officials in the CBI said they were still in the process of investigating the complaints. This is one of the rare occasions when the CBI and the human resource development ministry are jointly working on the investigations.

The CBI posted a link on its website -- " Complaints against AICTE" -- in July for people to lodge complaints.

CBI sources said the maximum complaints they have received pertained to violations by AICTE officials while sanctioning approval to technical institutes.

At times, institutes which do not meet the required parameters of built- up area, laboratory facilities or faculty have been given approval by the AICTE. Similarly, there are instances when AICTE officials demanded money from institutes to grant approval. " The details mentioned in the complaints are being investigated by us.

We are also taking the help of the ministry as we need to obtain the particular files in the cases which are at the AICTE office," said a CBI officer.

In fact, the CBI said the fact that tainted AICTE chairman professor R. A. Yadav was suspended helped instill in·still
