CAYUSE PASS CLOSED FOR WINTER

 CAYUSE PASS CLOSED FOR WINTER
OLYMPIA, Wash., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Cayuse Pass, SR 123, along

the eastern border of Mt. Rainier National Park, was closed for the rest of this winter at 8 a.m. today by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), WSDOT announced.
"This pass had been temporarily closed by our maintenance crews on Saturday, Dec. 7, because of deeper snow. More snow has fallen since then, and we've seen snow slides at the tunnel south of the pass summit. So, we've decided to close Cayuse Pass for the rest of the winter," said John Conrad, WSDOT's chief maintenance engineer. Cayuse Pass is normally reopened to vehicle traffic in the spring.
The mountain pass is closed from the Stevens Canyon Road, on SR 123, just north of the Ohanapacosh junction, and the junction with White Pass highway (U.S. 12), to the northwest gate at Mile Post 57.42, located just south of the Crystal Mountain Boulevard Cutoff on SR 410.
The earliest closing of Cayuse Pass was Nov. 16, 1984, and the latest closing, until today, was on Dec. 10, 1978. There was no closure during the mild weather winter of 1976. It was closed on Nov. 24, 1990.
