CATOMINE TREATMENT QUESTIONED.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

Sweet Catomine, who had unannounced physical problems in the week before her upset defeat in the Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000. , was falsely identified as a stable pony when she was sneaked off the racetrack grounds in the middle of the night for medical treatment, state authorities alleged in filing a complaint Monday against the filly's owner and a horse-van driver.

Owner Martin Wygod and van driver Dean Kerkhoff face an April 23 hearing before track stewards and could receive suspensions and fines.

Wygod is accused of violating California Horse Racing horse racing, trials of speed involving two or more horses. It includes races among harnessed horses with one of two particular gaits, among saddled Thoroughbreds (or, less frequently, quarterhorses) on a flat track, or among saddled horses over a turf course with  Board rules governing ``conduct detrimental'' to the sport, and Wygod and Kerkhoff are accused of breaking rules pertaining to the maintenance of horses' records.

Wygod declined to comment on the allegations when contacted Monday by a San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. The complaint followed a quick CHRB CHRB California Horse Racing Board

investigation prompted by Wygod's postrace revelation that Sweet Catomine had bled in a workout and battled a foot problem - and had been in heat for the first time - in the days before her fifth-place finish Saturday.

Wygod said he considered scratching Sweet Catomine but didn't in part because her appearance had been trumpeted in Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:

The comments angered bettors who lost money on Sweet Catomine, an even-money favorite in the race won by 30-1 shot Buzzards Bay Buzzards Bay, inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, 30 mi (48 km) long, from 5 to 10 mi (8–16 m) wide, SE Mass., connected with Cape Cod Bay by the Cape Cod Canal and bounded on the SE by the Elizabeth Islands. Wygod and trainer Julio Canani had said in the days before the Santa Anita Derby that the filly was in good shape.
