CATO JOHNSON AND WUNDERMAN MERGE TO FORM
 NEW GLOBAL MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS AGENCY
NEW YORK, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- A new type of marketing agency has been created through the merger, announced today of Cato Johnson, the world's largest sales promotion agency and Wunderman Worldwide, the leading direct marketing agency. Cato Johnson and Wunderman Worldwide are two of the group of five companies that make up Young & Rubicam Inc. The new company, Wunderman Cato Johnson, will provide clients with a broad global and local capability called "Action Marketing". Action Marketing addresses marketing problems with behavior-based communications programs that generate measurable results.
Wunderman Cato Johnson will have full service offices in 26 countries and start with billings of more than $1 billion to immediately become the largest agency of its kind.
Reflecting the new company's global standing, Jean-Paul Lafaye in Paris and John Sanders in New York will be joint worldwide presidents and CEOs; Lester Wunderman will serve as chairman. Speaking today Lafaye commented: "This was a client driven decision. By bringing our talents together we can provide problem-solving expertise with consultancy, creativity and accountability on an unprecedented scale. Together we can turn our experience into our client's sales successes."
Reinforcing this message, Sanders said: "We have merged because we share the same basic philosophy and business objectives: to help clients achieve sales results. Both our companies create communications programs aimed at changing customer behavior. Both our companies convince people to act, now. That is why we call it Action Marketing."
He continued: "Traditionally direct marketing and sales promotion have employed different techniques to get to the same end - measurable sales results. Together we become more client oriented and can focus on solutions rather than techniques."
The newly formed agency numbers many blue chip companies among its clients, including American Express, Perrier, Sony, Colgate, Columbia House, DuPont, Ford, Kodak and Philip Morris.
