MORE than 60 events are being organised in the Archdiocese to mark Capital of Culture year.

Music, art, history, heritage, prayer, spirituality and care for others are all being celebrated in dozens of events organised by people across the Archdiocese.

Archbishop Patrick Kelly said: "The Lord came to give us life in abundance. His followers cannot fail to play a full part in every endeavour to deepen life in all its variety in this Year of Culture."

The full programme, which is available at www.archdiocese-of-liverpool.co.uk/ 08calendar.pdf, includes two world premieres at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

The first, which is sold out, is on February 28, when the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra based in Liverpool, England, is one of the world's oldest established orchestras. It is part funded by the local authority, and is administered by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society (RPLS), a registered charity.  Orchestra performs John Taverner's Requiem.

On Saturday, December 13, the cathedral will host the premiere of a choral work by Sir Peter Maxwell-Davis.

Rick Wakeman performs the New Gospels Oratorio oratorio (ôrətôr`ēō), musical composition employing chorus, orchestra, and soloists and usually, but not necessarily, a setting of a sacred libretto without stage action or scenery.  on July 24.

From Thursday, October 2 the cathedral crypt will host Le Corbusier - the Art of Architecture, an exhibition of the French architect's life and work.

On alternate Sundays in May and June, Catholic heritage and the current work of the Liverpool Archdiocese will be celebrated in a series of five Walks of Faith. The first, on May 4, has the theme Our History as Catholics in Liverpool. The series ends on June 29 with a walk from Liverpool Parish Church to the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Throughout the year there will be a series of talks on prayer and spirituality at venues across the city and beyond.

In August and September St Francis Xavier in Salisbury Street will play host to an exhibition Held in Trust - 2008 years of sacred culture. Among the artefacts on display will be a book of Homilies A collection of authorized, printed sermons, to be read by ministers in churches, esp. one issued in the time of Edward VI., and a second, issued in the reign of Elizabeth; - both books being certified to contain a "godly and wholesome doctrine."

Thought for 08

"Now that 08 is finally here I can't help feeling 'yippee' for the opportunity we have.

But I also fear about the opportunity we may have lost.

Only time will tell. But, for now, I am going to support and enjoy what we have."
