  • Pope John Paul II (1978–2005), the only Polish Pope.
II's visit 10 years ago, Cardinal Roger Mahony His Eminence Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (born February 27, 1936) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He currently serves as the fourth Archbishop of Los Angeles, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991.  today will bless the site of a planned $50 million cathedral in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area.  and an outdoor liturgy are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on the cathedral site at Grand Avenue and Temple Street.

Today ``will be the biggest event for the archdiocese since the Pope's visit 10 years ago,'' said the Rev. Gregory Coiro, a church spokesman. ``It will be a wonderful celebration.''

The program will feature an 800-member choir of children and adults from throughout the archdiocese as well as Polish and Tongan dancers and a Mexican mariachi band.

Composer Christopher Walker will introduce a new composition and monks from the Franciscan Order of Assisi, Italy, will carry a stone from St. Mary of the Angels of the Portiuncula from which the new cathedral draws its name.

``I think it's going to be a wonderfully historic day for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and the archdiocese,'' said Monsignor Kevin Kostelnik, Mahony's secretary and event chairman. ``To be present for the ground blessing is a once-in-a-lifetime event.''

Mahony will deliver the homily homily (hŏm`əlē), type of oral religious instruction delivered to a church congregation. In the patristic period through the Middle Ages the focus of the homily was on the explanation and application of texts read or sung during the . Also speaking will be architect Jose Rafael Moneo and Mayor Richard Riordan.

The cathedral will replace 121-year-old St. Vibiana's, which was damaged in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and has been at the heart of legal wrangling between preservationists, who want to save the building, and the church, which wants to tear it down.

In June, preservationists placed St. Vibiana's Cathedral on a national list of endangered historic sites, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced that St. Vibiana's has made its 1997 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, joining the Flathead Indian reservation The Flathead Indian Reservation, located in western Montana on the Flathead River, is home to the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai and Pend d'Oreilles Tribes - also known as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation (1).  in Montana and Ellis Island National Monument in New York New York, state, United States

Meanwhile, the archdiocese and the city are continuing work on environmental impact reports that would allow the building to be to be demolished.

The new cathedral will be dedicated Sept. 4, 2000 - the same day as the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels and the advent of the third millennium.

Scale models of the planned 43,000-square-foot cathedral, which will feature the archdiocese's headquarters and the cardinal's private residence, will be on display during the ground blessing.

Archdiocese officials have not set a construction date because they still are working on completing the environmental impact report and obtaining city permits.
